Overview

The Histology Team Lead is responsible for supporting and providing guidance and technical expertise to all employees in the Histology Department while actively promoting a positive work environment. The team lead is an extension of the Histology management team, and your support, presence, and engagement are required to be successful within this role. 

 

*This is a non-exempt role paying $33.50-$37.50/hour. This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person’s relevant experience and/or education level. 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Timely QC of routine and special stained slides including:
  • Reconciliation of slides and blocks (ensure correct number present as well as documented on appropriate paperwork)
  • Completion of documentation (all initials and dates completed, paperwork is scanned and saved to appropriate folder on server)
  • All study materials moved to appropriate location(s)
  • Study status is updated in Smartsheets
  • ESM documentation
  • Support/assist RA’s with sample check in and reconciliation:
    • Perform second review of sample check in documentation.
    • Provide accurate description of tissue receipt and condition
      • If discrepancies are noted, provide context in the correct Histology management clearly defining the issues.
    • Morning Lead/Manager meet up
      • Prior to start of meeting
        • Know what the tech’s are currently working on and who may need additional work for the day.
        • Confirm/update Smartsheets
      • Actively participate by offering assignments and suggestions during the meeting
        • Identify employees’ strengths and weaknesses to recognize and suggest areas of improvement and for training opportunities.
      • Assign/find work for the techs outside of the weekly meeting as necessary.
      • Assign all embedding tasks
      • Inventory of all supplies in the Histo lab
      • Training techs
        • Special staining, trimming, embedding, microtomy, other support tasks, etc.
        • Ensuring they are filling out the training documentation, special stain documentation and shadow/assist them through the process from start to finish.
      • Logs
        • Ensure all lab maintenance documentation and logs are properly filled out.
      • Be a supportive resource for other coworkers within the Inotiv organization and help promote workshare opportunities.
      • Lead Check-in meetings
        • Prior to the start of the weekly meeting add topics into the lead teams channel agenda you would like to discuss during the meeting.

General Expectations:

  • Be prompt and prepared for work each day with a positive attitude.
  • Be flexible and accommodate daily changes in workflow and priorities.
  • Hours are between 7-8 am and 3-4 pm with (slight flexibility as needed) These hours will ensure you are available to the team to answer questions and train while also allowing for collaboration between other departments and availability for client calls and meetings. 10 hr. shifts may be discussed.
  • Be self-motivated and take initiative to learn new tasks and responsibilities (ask management what you can help with)
  • Supporting the Management team
    • Be involved and have visibility in daily operations.
    • Assist in the creation and review of SOPs, forms, process changes/improvements, etc.
    • Complete assigned projects in a timely manner (including special assigned projects)
    • Be aware of all meeting invitations, be prompt, prepared, and engaged in the meetings.
    • Collaborate with other departments and build professional relationships with those individuals.
    • Communicate information about issues regarding workflow including team frustrations.
    • Work with fellow team lead to be effective and communicate independently when needed.
  • Supporting the Histology Team
    • Be a team player and a dependable resource to answer questions.
    • Help employees troubleshoot any workflow issues including microtomy, special staining, machine maintenance and errors, etc.
    • Be willing and eager to train and mentor new and existing employees.
    • Empower fellow employees to go above and beyond by modeling appropriate behavior.

Professional Development:

  • Set personal leadership goals for personal and professional growth.
  • Assist management in setting department goals (present and future)
  • Send weekly email (to Histo Management) with list of personal accomplishments and status of ongoing tasks and projects.

Future Goals:

  • Lead the Monday meetings independently with minimal oversight from the management team.
  • Ordering of supplies within the Histo Department
  • Work order and study design review including project bucket and due date assignments, updating Smartsheet’s, ESM, etc.
  • Client phone calls
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

-Previous histology lab experience

-Certification preferred but not required
