Overview

We are seeking a Surgical Team Lead to join our dynamic team!  This position will focus on performing administrative, regulatory, and inter-departmental communication regarding surgical orders.  Other responsibilities include overall animal care and welfare, successful animal surgery completion, training of new staff, recordkeeping, and procedural duties. The person in this role will need to feel passionate about working with animals, enjoy and excel at organization, and support and maintain a clean, safe and compliant working environment.  We are seeking someone that is hardworking, shows attention to detail, takes initiative, has a teamwork mentality and positive attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Follows protocol to ensure the health and welfare of the animals in the Surgery teams’ care.
  • Works with managers in the development of new surgical models
  • Works with managers in the implementation of new and improved surgical techniques
  • Ensures animal welfare, IACUC, and quality standards are met within area of responsibility, which includes monitoring employee activity for compliance to work procedures.
  • Trains new Support Technicians and Surgeons
  • Suggests improvements to work instructions in accordance with the 3 Rs (Refine, Replace and Reduce).
  • Inventory control of drugs, including checking expirations dates, calculating concentrations of drugs, accurately maintaining and daily review of the inventory of controlled drugs
  • Coordinates order details to include selection, packaging and confirming accuracy.
  • Keeps accurate records of feeding, cleaning, and care of animals.
  • Animal anesthesia, prep, and post-operative care of surgical animals
  • Communicates orders with Customer Service, confirm resources, and assigns staff.
  • Reviews documentation logs, and department metrics.
  • Communicates and schedules animal requirements with production leaders.
  • Orders surgical equipment and products.
  • Assembles and prepares all pertinent surgery documentation and ensures accuracy of the documents.
  • As required, prepares shipping documentation and coordination of order shipping processes.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

We are looking for the following from the Surgical Team Lead:

  • Desire to work with and care for animals daily.
  • Interest in animal surgery and care
  • Continuous effort toward contributing to a clean and safe working environment.
  • Ability and willingness to complete paperwork as needed.
  • Must be available to work weekends/ holidays as needed.
  • Willingness to work overtime when needed.
  • Minimum, 4-year degree in animal science and at least 3 years’ experience in an animal research environment; pertinent work experience (such as laboratory, veterinary or surgical experience) may be substituted for education.
  • Ability to understand the written company standards and verbal instructions in English.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel, and Adobe
  • Respect for animal welfare.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Leadership skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Adherence to the company domestic pet policy and biosecurity.

 

This position requires that the Surgical Team Lead be able to:

  • lift, up to 50lbs on occasion.
  • stand/walk on concrete for at least 2 hours at a time.
  • frequently bend, reach, push, pull, squat, and lift

 

 

*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience.  The salary range will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person’s relevant experience and/or education level.
