Overview

The Inotiv Gaithersburg Maryland operational team is seeking a clinical veterinarian to help maintain the health, welfare and regulatory responsibilities of the animals housed within our facility. Prior experience in laboratory animal medicine is ideal, but not required as species-specific training and veterinary mentorship will be provided.  Private practitioners looking for a career change are encouraged to apply.  The Inotiv Gaithersburg Maryland site is an AAALAC accredited contract research organization that conducts drug safety assessment studies for regulatory submission.  In addition to general toxicology, our specialized focus includes developmental and reproductive studies in mostly rodents and rabbits.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Together with the Attending Veterinarian, provide clinical veterinary care and support for all animals in the facility (mostly rodents and rabbits)
  • Perform incoming health evaluations (acclimation release) and pre-screening activities for study animals such as physical and ocular examinations
  • Conduct regular vivarium rounds and animal welfare assessments
  • Engage with the technical staff to monitor data reports, identify and address animals needing supportive care, respond to animal health concerns, direct and perform treatments and rechecks until resolution.
  • Communicate with Study Directors regarding study animal issues, clinical evaluation findings, treatment plan and disposition.
  • Use Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) for documentation of study data and facility records.  
  • Serve as a voting member on the Inotiv Gaithersburg Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) including study protocol submission review, veterinary study updates at monthly meetings, policy and guideline review, veterinary perspective, facility program review and inspections
  • Along with the Attending Veterinarian, monitor and facilitate compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines and standards that relate to animal care and use (e.g. USDA AWA, PHS, AAALAC).
  • Assist with the preparation of regulatory reports, AAALAC accreditation program description and sponsor animal welfare evaluations
  • Provide veterinary expertise and consultation during study planning and study protocol development to ensure compliance with animal welfare, procedural and regulatory requirements.
  • Work with Study Directors to devise study specific veterinary palliative plans and humane endpoints for IACUC submission and review with the technical staff.
  • Interact with operational teams to champion animal welfare, advise on care and maintenance of laboratory animals and coordinate scheduling of planned veterinary activities.
  • Support management of the stock colony and oversight of the rodent sentinel health, preventative medicine, enrichment, social housing and facility sanitation programs.
  • Participate in the creation, review, revision and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Policies relating to animal procedures, husbandry and welfare
  • Research, develop and assess potential new procedures and technologies appropriate to toxicology studies
  • Provide training, instruction and guidance to scientific and operational staff as needed
  • May participate in sponsor conference calls, quality assurance audits and regulatory inspections
  • Maintain records and inventory of controlled chemical substances in accordance with federal regulations
  • Rotating on-call schedule for after-hours/emergency, weekend and holiday coverage

Qualifications

Position requirements

Completion of an AVMA or EAEVE accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) program

Attainment of license to practice veterinary medicine in Maryland within one year of employment

Attend continuing education courses as appropriate to maintain state veterinary license

 

*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience.  The salary range will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person’s relevant experience and/or education level.
